A favourite of vicars everywhere. This recipe from Alison Uttleys book "Recipes from an old Farmhouse"

Castleton is famous for the mining of semi precious "Blue John" a type of flurspar used in the making of jewellery.
1lb plain flour
12oz demerara sugar
1lb mixed currants and sultanas
4oz candied peel
12oz butter
1tsp bicarb sods
Mix together all the dry ingredients and make a well in the centre. Cut the butter into small pieces, sprinkle on the soda and pour a little boiling milk over it. Pour into the well and mix. bake in a moderate oven for about 2 hours. Serve with butter and jam.
